I Wish Pets Lived Longer

And Life Wasn’t so Expensive And Cake Didn’t Make You Fat!

Hello $[UD:FIRST_NAME||]$

Welcome Back to School?

I know – this welcome is a bit late!  Summer, as usual was a whirlwind of activities – not the least of all was the loss of our sweet Dachshund Dixie.  She would have been 15 years old on August 18th (incidentally was my folks 73rd Wedding Anniversary).  We all miss her very much – she was a special blessing in our lives!

Dixie at 8 weeks

Thanks to my 93-year old dad – Keith Somers  I have a 40-page book entitled:  Dixie, the First Weeks.  He captured and collected many excellent photos and memories, particularly when Dixie was a puppy.  Not only was he the photographer, but he did the layout and publishing of an exclusive hardbound book we will always cherish.  Thanks Dad – We love you!

Accept It!

If only life were like a Disney movie where pets lived forever, money grew on trees, and you could eat as much cake as you like without getting fat. But, in reality, we’re stuck with pets who age too quickly, a bank account that always seems to be in the red, and love handles for days from our addiction to sweets. It’s a given that we may have to deal with as much adversity in life as we do happiness, but in the end, it is the adversity that makes the happiness that much sweeter!

Funny Things Kids Say

Fun, engaging and inclusive!

Steve had our students’ attention from the very beginning. He spent a whole day at our school with multiple shows and a classroom visit and every show had the same enthusiasm and energy. Our students have missed having these types of experiences over the past few years and we hope to make “The Amazing Teacher” an annual event!

What is Family Fun Night?

Family Fun Night is around the corner.  It feels like summer has just begun and you know what that means… School will be starting back soon.

It’s an unchangeable fact of nature like the tide, the setting sun and the missing sock.  Soon that first Fall breeze will blow through the air and the summer life as we know it will begin to change…Summer is fun but it tends to disperse people as the habit of going to school is put on the back burner.

So what’s the solution?

Drew Barrymore Has a Twin?

Does Drew Barrymore have a twin sister?  I had the wonderful opportunity to kick off the Summer Reading Program at Chilhowie Public Library. Hopper and I presented the NEW Set Sail show. We had a great turn out and a terrific audience. Heather Carter was an amazing host and may also be the secret twin sister to Drew Barrymore.

Well, I’m Red in the Face!

Well, I’m red in the face.  After a recent performance of the Set Sail reading show a grandmother stopped by with her grand kids to meet Hopper the Magic Rabbit!  Her words made me blush!  She said, “That was a fabulous show!  The best I have seen in a long time!”  It is always humbling but also wonderful to get positive unsolicited feedback!  And yes, it can make me turn library red!  You know, everything in the library should be “read” – especially the books. :)

Well, I'm red in the face!

I Didn’t See This Coming!

I launched my NEW Set Sail reading show in May.  I was so happy to make a return visit to one of my favorite schools:  Rocky River Elementary in Mooresville, NC.  We always have a great time together, but I didn’t see this coming!  One of the teachers shared this comment about her Pre-K son Evan:

Evan just informed me that the magic boy named Pirate Steve came to school today and showed him some cool magic tricks and new books about treasure. I’m so glad that he got to see the show! He LOVED it!

Who knew?  Magic Boy?  Pirate Steve?  I think I like it!  :)

Why My Wife Left Me Today!

My wife left me today?  Actually, it is NOT what you are thinking.  Mary, my wife, left for Georgia to visit and assist with care of her 92-year old mother.  I remained here to perform six Summer Reading shows in North Carolina.

We love our moms!  This past spring, I visited Breckenridge Elementary School in Fincastle, VA . It was their first live assembly in two years (due to COVID). We celebrated with Marcy Wohlford (librarian) and the fantastic students and staff during Read Across America week! I presented the Salute to Seuss magic show! I was so pleased to have my 92-year old mother spend the day with me. She is my biggest fan!  Over the years she has made most of the table drapes, curtains and cloth magic props that appear in my shows.  Thanks Mom!
